Study in Portugal: universities, tuition fees and admission
Our catalogue has 120 universities and colleges in Portugal offering 1,438 undergraduate programmes in 62 cities. 1,001 of the programmes are at public institutions and 437 at private ones.
Always check current information on the official website of the university before you apply.
How admission works
National Access Contest (Concurso Nacional de Acesso), score 95–200: secondary school average (at least 50%) plus national entrance exams (at least 35%), weights set by each course. The cutoff shown is the score of the last student admitted in the 1st phase. EU citizens compete on equal terms; non-EU citizens usually apply through the special contest for international students with each institution's own requirements.
- Selection: cut-off score
- Main exam or platform: Concurso Nacional
Tuition fees in Portugal
At public universities an EU student typically pays €697 a year, and a student from outside the EU €3,500 a year. All amounts are per year in euros; fees charged per credit or per semester are converted to a full year (60 ECTS credits or two semesters).
| EU students, typical | EU students, range | Non-EU students, typical | Non-EU students, range | Programmes with a published fee | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Public universities | €697 | €697 | €3,500 | €1,100–€18,000 | 1,001 of 1,001 |
| Private universities | — | — | — | — | 0 of 437 |
Where the fee depends on family income, the typical figure is the full fee and the range starts at the lowest one.
Good to know about fees
- Public institutions: tuition capped at €697 per year, also for 2026/27 (2026 State Budget Law, art. 161); an institution may charge less. Non-EU citizens applying as international students pay a price set by each institution — shown when the institution has officially published it. Citizens of CPLP countries (Brazil, Angola, etc.) often get a discount; those living in Portugal for 2+ years are not international students.
Language of instruction
